Veteran Services: Free urns for veterans

When one of our family members, who was a veteran passed away, our family checked into cremation and looked at urns to purchase. After looking at the different options, it was decided that we could make a quality wooden urn that would honor our loved one. After finishing the wooden urn, we decided to honor all veterans and offer support to their families by providing a free urn. These free urns are made possible by generous donations.

Each free urn is professionally handmade using quality oak wood and is personalized with a military service seal and a name plate that lists the veteran's name, rank, military service and life dates.

How does a veteran's family receive a free urn? When a veteran dies, families can contact free urns for veterans. The following information is required:

• A completed urn request form. (Online at www.freeurnsforveterans.org)

• A copy of the Veteran's DD-214 or other approved discharge papers. We use the same requirement as the Department of Veterans Affairs: Veterans who have met minimum active service duty and were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

• A copy of the Veteran's cremation certificate.
