The memorial service celebrating the life of Stephen Van Batavia, formerly of Hewitt, MN, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, at the Verndale Alliance Church in Verndale, with Pastor Daryl Jacobson presiding.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service.

Stephen, age 74, passed away on May 3, 2022, at St. Joseph’s Essentia Health in Brainerd, MN.

Stephen “Steve” was born to Peter and Catherine (DeVries) Van Batavia on October 27, 1947, in Montevideo, MN. His schooling involved special education and he went on to become a custodian. After hours, Steve liked to go 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, along with engineering and creating audio devices. He had a talent for making videos with musical backgrounds. With a kind heart, Steve cared for his pets and fed birds throughout each season. Steve’s nephews and nieces loved the many hours of being a part of all the activities he enjoyed. He was a faithful church member, too.

Preceding Steve in death were his parents, Peter and Catherine; siblings: Joanne and James; nephews: Chad and Adam; and niece, Julie.

Steve will always be remembered by his siblings: Robert (Linda) Van Batavia and Conrad (Shirley) Van Batavia, both of Verndale, MN.

Honorary urn bearers will be Dan Cram, Randy Van Batavia, Jason Van Batavia, and Aaron Van Batavia.

Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Hewitt Cemetery, Hewitt, MN.

The family extends a special thank you to the group homes, staff members, neighbors, store clerks, and postal workers who assisted in lovingly watching over Stephen through the years.
