Hazel, "Honey" as she was known to family and close friends, was born on December 12, 1922 in Wadena, Minnesota to August and Ida (Worm Imsande) Stoecker. Hazel was the youngest of 11 children.
On July 24, 1943 Hazel was united in marriage at St. Ann's Catholic Church to Richard Violett Jr. They resided in Rose City. Dick was drafted into the US Navy shortly thereafter. Upon his discharge they moved to Chehalis, Washington. Their daughter, Ramona Jean, was born in Chehalis, Washington. In 1950, Hazel and (Ramona) Jean returned to Wadena. She later married Ted Nelson. Together they had a son, Ted R. Nelson.
Hazel loved working outdoors, in her garden, lawn and flowers. She roto-tilled gardens for several individuals for years. It was not uncommon for her to take bouquets of her peonies to the local banks and Humphrey Manor. She enjoyed playing bingo for years at local churches, Legion Clubs, and VFW's. Later she played bingo at the casinos and enjoyed the slot machines. She worked at Homecrest Industries for 15 years.
Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, August and Ida Stoecker; husbands: Richard Violett and Ted Nelson; siblings: Lillian Imsande Petrie, Fred Imsande, Marie Imsande Dieckhaus, Herman Imsande, Glady Stoecker Hunt, Auggie Stoecker, Ida Stoecker North, baby Leo Stoecker, Leo Stoecker, and Louise Stoecker; mother and father-in-law: Laura and Dick Violett; sisters-in-law: Margie Violett Snyder, Laura Violett Deckert, and Irene Violett; and her great-grandson: Michael Eric Stokes.
Surviving family includes Hazel's daughter: Ramona Jean Stokes (Larry) of Hewitt, Minnesota; son Ted (Sarah) Nelson of Hewitt; sisters-in-law: Betty (Violett) Uselman of Clitherall, Minnesota, Myrtle (Violett) Roberts of Chehalis, Washington, and Mary Ann (Violett) Guy of Centralia, Washington; brother-in-law: George Violett of Centralia, Washington; 6 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Hazel lived most of her life in Wadena, Minnesota. After a fall and a fractured pelvis in November, 2016, she has been a resident of the Clarissa Care Center. Hazel passed away on January 9, 2019 at the age of 96. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. An inurnment will be planned for this spring.
