The Wadena-Deer Creek baseball team has the recipe for success. The Wolverines have dominant pitching and timely hitting, which was on display in its 3-0 victory over the New York Mills Eagles on April 23 at the Russ Jacobson Field in New York Mills.
Payton Rondestvedt pitched into the seventh inning for the win. He scattered three hits and struck out seven and walked two batters. Justin Dykhoff closed it out on four pitches, striking out the only batter he faced for the save.
Rondestvedt did not allow a base runner past second base and was in control for much of the contest. He retired nine in a row in the middle innings, which was snapped on a single in the fourth, but the batter was quickly erased via a force out. He worked around a lead off walk in the fifth and a lead off single in the sixth. He retired the first two batters in the seventh, before he issued his second walk. Dykhoff came in for the save, securing the 3-0 victory.
Colby Schertler continued his timely hitting. He drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single to left in the first inning. Max Phillips reached on an error, moved to second on a bunt and advanced to third on a fly ball, before scoring on the RBI single by Schertler.
Small ball worked again for the Wolverines in the fifth inning. Chase Nordlund singled, moved to second on a bunt, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Tony Kreklau sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
Jusin Dykhoff doubled with one out in the sixth inning and scored when Schertler dropped in a single to centerfield, which made it 3-0.
The offense was more than enough for Rondestvedt, who found himself locked into a duel with New York Mills’ Caden Roberts. Roberts battled for six innings for New York Mills. He allowed three runs on just four hits. He struck out one and walked one while taking the loss for the Eagles.
Derin Gaudette pitched the seventh inning for Mills. He struck out one and walked one batter in his inning of work.
Schertler finished with two hits for Wadena-DC, while Dykhoff and Chase Nordlund added one each in the win.
Roberts, Logan Small and Preston Newborg had hits for Mills in the loss.
