Wolverines run past Staples-Motley
Wadena-Deer Creek boys basketball head coach Kevin Tumberg said the team was frustrated with the outcome of its game with Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in their season-opener. The Wolverines let those frustrations out on Staples-Motley when they rolled to an 82-51 victory over the Cardinals on Dec. 4 in Staples.
Tumberg said the team felt they didn’t play to their abilities in the opening loss to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
“We took plays off and were lazy at times and we worked on changing that,” Tumberg said. “We looked like a completely different team tonight.”
Tumberg said the team came out full of energy and focus. He said they talked about being more focused in what they wanted to do.
Bereket Loer broke out in a big way for the Wolverines. The guard finished with 27 points to lead all scorers. He connected on five of his 11 3-point attempts. Zach Shaw finished with 12 points, while Payton Rondestvedt added 15.
The Wolverines clamped down on Staples-Motley, holding them to 30 percent shooting from the field (21 of 68) and seven percent shooting from the 3-point line (1 of 14).
“Defensively, we talked about being active and making teams feel uncomfortable,” Tumberg said. “We also stressed rebounding and attached rebounding to giving effort. We rebounded a lot better tonight than we did in game one.”
The Wolverines held a 39-27 rebounding edge. Cooper Folkestad was strong on the glass for the Wolverines. The forward finished with 12 rebounds to go with his nine points.
Chase Davis, Bentley Christensen and Sivert Klefsaas finished with eight points each for the Cardinals.
The Wolverines improve to 1-1 overall and return home to take on Breckenridge at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 6.
