The Wadena Garden Club Yard of the Month for August goes to Dorothy and Ray Beyer, who live in southwest Wadena.

"Dorothy sets up her flower beds so that there's some color all summer long," Ray said. "It starts with tulips in the spring and then irises, lilies, coneflowers and more."

The Beyers have added landscaping to their home, which they moved into just over a year ago, and have plans for future projects.

Late last week, the dahlias along the south side of their house were in full bloom with an assortment of colors.

"This is the highlight of it right here," Ray remarked Friday morning.

Dorothy winters over the dahlias, which are a bulb plant.

Special attention is paid to the types of plants in the yard and where they are located.

"I have lots of butterflies," Dorothy added. "The liatris and other plants such as blazing stars really attract them."

Throughout the yard, Dorothy has potted plants that follow a certain structure.

"You have to have a thriller, a spiller and a filler," Dorothy said. "So all my pots are done that way and I coordinate the colors."

In the spring she had 350 tulips blooming. They have added a new garage with a potting shed, hosta bed, plus a patio area.
