The Verndale Historical Society's idea to build a large mural wall near Highway 10 should spark a larger conversation about a region-wide tourism plan.
The idea, brought to the Verndale City Council this month, is to build a large wall and paint it with historical scenes to attract tourists to stop in the town.
Of course, this plan has many similarities to the Wadena Alley Arts project. And that's a good thing.
Communities in this area should begin a discussion for working together to attract history-related tourism. Wadena's Depot project, the In Their Own Words veterans museum in Perham and other historical attractions in the area could be linked together and marketed together, trying to bring history buffs to the area.
Could we market a physical link -- Highway 10 -- and create the "History Highway"? Would such an effort be embraced -- and, in part, funded -- by the Minnesota Legislature to spark outstate tourism?

There are a lot of similar efforts that could be linked together. Representatives from the various interests should get together and see if their goals and visions are compatible enough to join forces.
History seekers will hear us more clearly if we band together and speak with one voice.
