Wolverines skate to 3-3 tie

Brian Kulenkamp's third period goal gave Mora/Hinckley a 3-3 overtime tie with Dan Savoie's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines Saturday in a rematch of the 2008 WDC Holiday Tournament finalists.

The Wolverines bunched their goals in the second period with Joey Peters, Brandon Wing and Trevor Ness finding the net. Wing's goal was the only power play score of the game by either side. Peters, Ness, Joey Osborn, Colter Pettit and Logan Meyer earned assists.

Jake Horbacz scored twice for the Mustangs.

The Wolverines will host a rematch with arch-rival Park Rapids Thursday at 7 p.m.

Trevor Ness came up with a hat trick and a four-point game Thursday as the Wolverines racked up their first Mid-State Conference win by beating Detroit Lakes.

Joey Osborn opened the scoring at the 15:20 mark of the opening period with an unassisted goal.

Detroit Lakes' Nate Baker countered just 12 seconds later off a feed from Travis Maristuen.

Ness found the net again at 7:57 of the opening period. The Lakers tied the game with just 1:44 left when Tanner Lane scored.

The Wolverines began to gain an edge in the second period as Dylan Carlisle connected with a pass from Ness at the 16:16 mark.

Detroit Lakes' Brett Provo cashed in on a power play opportunity at the 6:26 mark of Period 2 with assists from Davis Johnson and Alex Phelps.

Ness took a feed from Osborn with 2:16 left in the second period to put the Wolverines on top for good. His final goal at the 11:10 mark of the third period was set up by Kyle Beiswenger.

WDC goalie Tyler Muehler faced just 11 shots in the first two periods but deflected 13 in the final stanza. Muehler finished the game with 24 saves. Andrew Friesen stopped 27 shots for the Lakers.
