Westrum: No walkout scheduled Wednesday at WDC Middle/High School

Wadena-Deer Creek Superintendent Lee Westrum told the Pioneer Journal Wednesday morning that no walkout is scheduled at the middle/high school this morning at 10 a.m.

Wadena-Deer Creek Superintendent Lee Westrum told the Pioneer Journal Wednesday morning that no walkout is scheduled at the middle/high school this morning at 10 a.m.

A National Walkout Day is being held at other schools worldwide in remembrance and in protest of the 17 lives lost when a gunman opened fire Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

"There isn't anything planned," Westrum said. "If students want to participate they'll be able to. They have First Amendment rights and we'll respect that."

Westrum said students who skip class in favor of walking out will be treated as absent. Their parents will be contacted and if they excuse it Westrum said the students will be excused.

"Anytime you have events like this a lot of learning can take place," Westrum said.
