WDC track, field has busy week

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls track and field team earned the runner-up spot in both the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Invitational on April 18 and Pelican Rapids Invitational on April 20.

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls track and field team earned the runner-up spot in both the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Invitational on April 18 and Pelican Rapids Invitational on April 20.

The host team was the champion in both meets with the Wolverines scoring 104 points in LPGE and 119 in Pelican Rapids.

The meet was called with three events remaining in the LPGE Invitational with WDC finishing four points behind the Thunder but well ahead of four other teams. The Wolverines 119 points at the Pelican Rapids Invitational was a season high.

Three relay teams. The 4x800 meter relay team of Emily Wood, Kelsey Browne, Hannah Toedter and Rachel Papillon and the 4x200 meter relay team of Jessica Davis, Brigetta Berg, Cassy Popp and Alexa Hoffman winning in both meets. The 4x100 meter relay team won in LPGE, and the 4x400 meter team won at Pelican Rapids.

Wood had two individual wins with the 400 meters at LPGE and the 800 meters at Pelican Rapids. Berg won the pole vault in LPGE, while Toedter in the 3200 and Hoffman in the long jump both won in Pelican Rapids.

Papillons best individual finish was second in the 800. Jessica Davis had placed third three times, twice in the 300 meter hurdles and once in the shot put. Sara Ruerink finished third in the shot put. Jessica Salges best finish of the week was a fourth in the 400. Molly Barret was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. Browne was fifth in the 400. Popp was sixth in the shot put, and Kirsten Tentler was sixth in the discus.

Three girls earned two personal records with Wood in the 400 (65.88) and 800 (2:40.83), Tentler in the 400 (74.42) and discus (73 4) and Chelsea Boeckman in the shot put (22 9) and discus (61 6). Five earned one personal record with Berg in the discus (99 2), just nine inches out of the Wolverine all-time top 10; Ruerink in the discus (891), Salge in the 400 (70.84), Barrett in the 200 (30.04) and Rachel Richter in the 100 (15.34).

The Wolverine boys team finished third at LPGE and fourth in Pelican Rapids.

Eric Asfeld had five victories, two meet records and two personal best records. His meet and personal records were in the two hurdle events at Pelican Rapids. In the 100-meter hurdles, Asfelds time of 14.8 was his best by .15 and his 38.95 300-meter hurdle race lowered his school record by .66 seconds.

Tim Richards had two wins in the discus and a second and third place finish in the shot put. Cory Asfeld had his first win ever in the 3200 in 11:05.23, a second place finish in the 1600 at 5:08.59 and fourth in the 800 in 2:21.07, all personal records.

The 4x100 meter relay team placed runner-up in both meets. Riley Snyder, Aaron Kern and Cody Truax ran the relay in both meets with Max LaBarre and Cody Hamann running once each. Both LaBarre and Hamann each had one runner-up finish in the pole vault with LaBarre setting a personal record by a foot with his 9-foot vault in Pelican Rapids.

The 4x200 meter teams were third in both meets. Snyders best individual finish was a fourth in the long jump. Truax was fifth in the long jump; Michael Paulson was fifth in the triple jump, Marquis Wilson sixth in the discus. Wilsons throw of 826 was his person best. Antonio St. Marie placed sixth in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes at Pelican Rapids with a 12.12 personal record in the 100.

The Wolverines compete at Walker on Friday and will host the Browne Invitational at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The Wadena-Deer Creek junior high track and field teams host a meet beginning at 4 p.m. today (Thursday).
