Wadena-Deer Creek High School juniors Andrea Jensen and Taylor Garcia have been selected to attend Girls and Boys State this summer.

Minnesota Girls State and Boys State is a week-long experience of learning about Minnesota government at the local, county and state levels.

"The participants will actually organize and participate in the various levels and branches of government," explained Marilyn Uselman of Wadena's American Legion Auxiliary.

The American Legion Auxiliary sponsors Minnesota Girls State program, which will be held June 14-20 at Bethel University in Arden Hills, Minn. The American Legion-sponsored Boys State is June 14-20 at Southwest State University in Marshall, Minn.

Highlights of the week include political speakers, mock trials, campaigning, elections, and announcement of the State Governor and State Constitutional Officers.

According to Dennis Peterson of Wadena's American Legion, the young men and women who attend Girls and Boys State will take this knowledge and experience back into their school and community, using it and sharing it with others.

Both Jensen and Garcia said they are "honored" to be selected by the local American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary to represent Wadena-Deer Creek High School.
