About 45 students from Wadena-Deer Creek High School are volunteering to help with the sandbagging efforts in Fargo on Tuesday, March 24.

On Monday morning, WDC English teacher Jay Patterson watched the news as the Fargo-Moorhead area desperately asked for volunteers to help with the rising waters, which intensified by the recent rain. When he got to school, Patterson talked with staff and administrators about the possibility of organizing a group of students to help sandbag. He got the green light from administration to go ahead and see if students from grades 10 through 12 would be interested.

And they were: about 45 students expressed interest in signing up for the trip. The students will leave on a school bus Tuesday morning at 6:45 a.m. from the Commons area. They each are required to turn in a permission slip with a signature from a parent or guardian allowing them to help with the effort.

Patterson also distributed a list of apparel needs, which includes rain gear, waterproof boots, warm clothes, change of clothing, work gloves, lunch and drinking water.

They are expected to return late afternoon or early evening. In addition to Patterson, WDC teachers Travis Hensch and Curt Grenier will serve as chaperones.
