Voters in the Wadena-Deer Creek school district voted down a $700 per child excess levy referendum by a nearly 2-1 margin.
Unofficial results provided by the district Tuesday night showed 1,277 "no" votes and 671 "yes" votes. Votes against the levy amounted to 65.6 percent of all votes cast.
"Well, obviously I'm disappointed," said Superintendent Jerry Enget of the results. "But the people voted and that's what we have to go by."
Enget said the school board would have to begin addressing what to do without the added funds at its next meeting.
If passed, the referendum would have brought another $710,000 into the district, about half from the state and half from local taxpayers.

The results won't be official until the school board canvasses the 1,948 votes, which is expected to happen Wednesday night.
