Wadena-Deer Elementary School has received a $8,500 boost in technology thanks to donations from the Wadena-Deer Creek Parent-Teacher Organization, Deer Creek Lions and Wadena State Bank.

The three donations will pay for an additional 20 iPads for K-4 classrooms. Currently, elementary classrooms have five iPads per classroom.

According to Wadena-Deer Creek Elementary Principal Louis Rutten, the iPads are used for independent student work centers.

"Students do reading activities on the iPad, such as read to self, partner reads, and record their reading for fluency checks. During math, they are used to complete Accelerated Math tests, working with numbers and operations problems, as well as visiting MobyMax and Study Island websites for extra targeted practice on grade-level math standards," Rutten explained.

WDC third-grade teacher Jeff Mehl said third-grade classrooms use their set of iPads daily during stations work in their Reading block and also daily during Accelerated Math.

"Our students love using the iPads and we are very grateful that our PTO, Deer Creek Lions and Wadena State Bank have so generously donated funds which provide another iPad to each classroom here at WDC Elementary," Mehl said.

Wadena-Deer Creek PTO Treasurer Kent Schmidt said the money from the $7,200 PTO donation was raised thanks to the fall gourmet candy and gifts fundraiser.

"The support from our WDC families, friends and communities has been amazing for the second year in a row," Schmidt said.

Last year's PTO proceeds funded a new set of eight swings in the elementary playground.
