The Wadena Wastewater Treatment Plant would like to change the disinfection process from chlorine to UV. Now, water is treated by having gaseous chlorine pumped into a chamber. Sulfur dioxide at the other end of the chamber neutralizes the chlorine.
Converting to an ultraviolet system is important for safety reasons. Working with chlorine can be dangerous. Also, a UV system could save money because chlorine won't need to be purchased. One of the only costs should be replacing bulbs.
BDM Consulting Engineers and Surveyors, PLC, provided engineering services and estimated the total construction cost to be $149,000.
Public Works Director Ron Bucholz said he would like to start the project in November and finish by April. Before the project can start, the plan needs to be approved by the Pollution Control Agency.
