The Old Wadena Society, formerly WHELP, is holding its annual spring program on Sunday, April 15 at the Wahoo Valley Inn.

The program speaker is Mathew J. Mattson, biologist and archaeologist, discussing American Indian cultures from pre-historic times up to the present. Mattson has 20 years experience on dozens of archaeological excavations and has researched the stone tool, ceramics and other technologies of the different periods of the past. He is working with the Leech Lake Heritage Sites Program in their research at the recently discovered prehistoric Walker Hill site near Walker, and is a spokesman for that project. He has also developed a unique replica collection of prehistoric artifacts and tools which he will bring with him to examine and discuss.

The Old Wadena Society Founders Award will be presented to Dr. Duane Lund for his interest, research and publications expanding knowledge of Northern Minnesota history. Lund has published 42 books including four in which the Old Wadena site is included.

The program begins at 1 p.m. in the Wahoo Valley Inn on the Crow Wing River, 11 miles north of Staples. The program is free and open to the public. Attendees may choose to come early and enjoy a famous "Wahoo Burger" before the program begins at 1 p.m.
