Wadena boxers to compete Saturday

The Region IV Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wadena National Armory.

Teams in the schedule include Wadena, Fergus Falls, Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Willmar, St. Cloud, Moorhead and Duluth.

There is a full card of boxing excitement scheduled starting with the Class A championship bouts with the winners receiving jackets. Bouts are planned in the 125, 132, 141, 152, 165, 178 and heavyweight classes.

Novice bouts are also planned with the winners receiving trophies. The novice bouts are for boxers with fewer than 10 bouts under their belts.

Wadena Class A boxers entered in the tournament include Bruce Butler, Kody Thompson, Cody McManigle, TJ Steward, Dewayne Steward and Trent Petro, while Travis Petro, Frank Orsello, Billy Richards and Brent Steward will box for Wadena in the novice bouts.

Class A winners will advance to the Upper Midwest Tournament on April 14-15 in Hinckley.

Three Wadena boxers win at Crosby

Three Wadena Golden Gloves boxers emerged victorious in Crosby on Saturday. Travis Petro at 147 pounds won a decision over Chad VanVickle of Brainerd; Frank Orsello won a third-round RSC (referee stops contest) over Brainerds Derek Enlund in the 170-pound bout. Dewayne Steward won a 165-pound elimination bout over Tony Griggs of Duluth. Steward will now face Ricky Avlie of Brainerd Saturday at the Region IV Tournament in Wadena.
