The District 818 board gave Superintendent Paul Brownlow the green light last week to provide Verndale school with better security and an elementary reading coach in the near future.
Brownlow provided the board with a estimate from Protection Systems, Inc. of Fargo and the board approved the expenditure of $24,952.
Protection Systems will be installing card access at the west doors of the school and cameras in the elementary wing. The equipment has a one-year warranty.
The west doors are almost exclusively used by students parking in the school parking lot.
At the present time, the Verndale school building is open from 6-8:30 a.m. and then locked down until 2:30 p.m.

Brownlow would like to add a reading coach to the faculty staff by January. Brownlow pointed out that the school is not behind in its reading skills but it is always looking for added flexibility.
"We want to be pro-active, we have many kids with different goals,"Brownlow said. "We expect all students to be at grade level or making significant progress toward that grade level."
