Verndales long-time liquor store manager Shirley Anderson will retire this summer.

She began working at the liquor store in 1978 and has been the manager for about 15 years. Before becoming the manager, she was a bartender.

Anderson announced her retirement at the Verndale City Council meeting on March 9. Her last official day will be June 15.

She said she made many friends while working at the liquor store.

Im going to miss the people, Anderson said.

As she retires, she looks forward to spending time with her grandchildren.

In other business, the board:

" Listened to an update on filling the police chief position. Four people were interviewed. Background checks are being conducted.

" Listened to the police report.

" Listened to the liquor store report. Anderson attended the Minnesota Municipal Beverage Association Boot Camp.

" Approved buying an evidence safe.

" Read the maintenance department report. Jim Bergquist, maintenance supervisor, reported Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires the city to have a program to discuss safety issues. Bergquist will acquire more information.

" Listened to the clerks report. Verndale did not receive the housing rehabilitation grant application from the Department of Employment and Economic Development.

" Agreed to appoint Don Weniger as the emergency management director.
