Verndale Police Chief Bill Gilroy gave his resignation to the Verndale City Council Sept. 4, citing personal reasons for leaving.

"I have some personal issues I need to take care of," Gilroy said. "I've very much enjoyed working here. I love Verndale, I love my job, but I'm going to have to move on."

Gilroy didn't elaborate on his reason for leaving. The council accepted his resignation, and praised Gilroy for the work he's done as chief in the past year and a half.

"I thank you for your professionalism and what you've done for this department," said Mayor Wayne Stave. "I think it's come a long way since you've been here."

Gilroy started on the job at the beginning of May 2006. He previously worked for the Clay County Sheriff's Office, Dilworth

Police Department and Glyndon Police Department. He's a native of Aldrich.

Gilroy's last official day will be Oct. 4.

The council decided to start advertising for the position right away, but members of the council also said they're not in a big hurry to get someone new in the job. They expressed confidence in Norm Pettis, a 17-year chief in Sebeka who recently started working part-time with the Verndale department.

"I want to take our time and find the right person," said council member Leland Moyer.
