With winter closing in, the Up North Knitters Club is shipping out a record 658 stocking caps for those in need.

The members of the group know no season when it comes to their knitting and crocheting.

A large pile of caps in all colors and sizes adorned a large table at Lolita Myers' Tae Kwon Do Studio last Wednesday, as the combined efforts of 16 club members joined ranks.

The collection of caps will find their way onto heads all over Minnesota according to Vice President Carol Hotchkiss. They are going out to WIC members in Wadena, to Park Rapids, to the Eagles Healing Nest in Sauk Centre, to the Veterans' Home in Harding and even to Kodiak Island off the southern coast of Alaska where they will be transported on their final leg by the U.S. Coast Guard.

"You'd be surprised by how many kids don't have proper headgear," Hotchkiss said.

While the skills they provide in making clothing is volunteered, Hotchkiss said the club, which has been working since 1977, will not refuse any contributions of yarn that come their way.

The club meets once a month, and November's rendezvous will mark the beginning of a new project.

Club members include Myers, Hotchkiss, Ann Carrole, Ann Erickson, Alice Gronlund, Cathy Taus, Krissy Estabrook, Delaine Ackermann, Louetta Hanneman, Ida McLeod, Carla Emons, Hilda Benjamin, Jean Ciesinski, Betty Ann Hogas, Jan Walkup and LeeVerne Yocum.
