Top-ranked Staples-Motley eliminated the Wadena-Deer Creek girls tennis team from the West 6A Sub-section girls tennis tournament by a score of 6-1 at St. John's University in Collegeville on Monday. The lone win for the Wolverines came at No. 2 doubles as Elizabeth Quincer and Andrea Jensen teamed up to win a tough three-set tiebreaker 7-5, 3-6, (7-5) over the Cardinals' Liz Willgohs and Caitlin Robinson.
The loss eliminates the Wolverines from the team competition but the Section 6A individual tournament started on Tuesday. Results from the individual tournament will be in next week's PJ.
The defeat to Staples-Motley capped a rough season for the Wolverines as they split a pair of dual matches last week.
The Wolverines defeated the visiting West Central Area Knights on Sept. 30 by a score of 5-2. Katie Anderson was dominating in her No. 1 singles match, sweeping the two-set match by 6-0, 6-0 scores over West Central's Mikayla Paulson.
Rachel Richter was the other Wolverine singles winner at No. 3 as she defeated Nicole Anderson in two sets, 6-3 and 6-2.

All three Wolverine doubles teams won with the No. 3 duo of Megan Schmidt and Brittany Ellingson bouncing back from a 4-6 first set loss to win 6-1 and 7-6.
All season long, the Achilles heel for the Wolverine girls tennis team was the inability to find a way to win close matches.
On Oct. 2, the Wolverines traveled to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and lost another close match by a 4-3 score.
Katie Anderson, Quincer and Macey Hartman all won their singles matches for the Wolverines in the non-conference loss to the Thunder.
Anderson defeated Katy Marzak 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles with Quincer defeating. Jenna Atkinson 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 and Hartman won the No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-4 over Brittany Plemish.
Long Prairie-Grey Eagle swept all three doubles matches to escape with the victory.
The Wolverines finished the season with a 6-13 overall record.
