As school ends, summer recreation programs are about to begin.

Most Wadena summer recreation programs begin June 12. The pool opens June 5.

Summer recreation offers many activities from a variety of sports to swimming lessons to playground. New this year are preschool T-ball and sports exploratory. Traveling baseball and softball return after being previously cut.

We have some great things that are going to be happening this summer, said Doug Paulson, summer recreation director.

The summer recreation staff has been hired. Paulson looks forward to working with the coaches.

We have a wonderful staff, he said.

This year, some of the coaches will only teach a specific sport rather than only a specific age group of kids.

Baseball, softball and golf coaches will work directly with kids in their respective sports. A general recreation staff will work with the activities that dont fall into the baseball, softball and golf categories.

The summer rec activities take place at differing times and days, depending on the program and age group.

The returning traveling baseball and softball will meet four days a week. They play about 10 games with neighboring towns. Traveling baseball and softball is for boys and girls in grades three through six. Kids interact with the Alexandria Beetles June 12.

The new preschool T-ball will be offered for boys and girls ages 4 to kindergarten. Kids learn the basics by meeting one hour per week.

Also new is the sports exploratory for first- and second-graders. Kids in sports exploratory learn tennis, basketball and flag football.

One event the kids can prepare for this summer is the Hersheys Track and Field meet July 15 at the Wadena-Deer Creek track. The meet is promoted by the Hershey candy company. Summer recreation staff is working on arrangements for kids to qualify for state competition.

Basketball camps will be offered for girls and boys in grades kindergarten through high school.

Not listed in the summer recreation booklet are tennis camps for boys and girls June 12-15. Tennis camps will be offered for third- through 12th-graders.

For those who will be in Wadena on July 4, the pool will be open, whereas it has been closed other years.

The pool will be open because people may not want to travel as much due to high gas prices, and people want to spend time outside, Paulson said. Improvements for the pool upkeep, pool cover and kiddie pool are still being explored.

If bad weather should occur during summer recreation activities, weather radios, which were recently donated, will alert coaches of weather warnings.

Many businesses have donated to support summer recreation.

Business sponsorships are up 15 percent, said Kelly Magnuson, summer recreation chairwoman.

Descriptions, times and dates of summer recreation activities are listed in the summer recreation booklets. The booklets were given to WDC students at school to take home. More copies are available at the WDC school offices.
