Six Wadena-Deer Creek choir students and 28 band students will advance to state competition on May 6.

Six choir students will advance to state after competing Friday in Menahga. Choir students are Lindsay DeLeeuw, Ryan Klawitter, Jaclyn Kramer, Nicole Larabel, Samantha McGrane and Zach Stevens. They competed in the choir contest on Friday in Menahga.

Band students competing at state are: Katie Anderson and Elizabeth Quincer, saxophone duet; Cody Bain, Mason Lynk, Tim Papillon and Rachel Richter, percussion ensemble; Courtney Bernu and Abbe Malone, saxophone duet; Jeff Brown, Aaron Jackson, Erik Johannes, Daniel Rokenbrodt, Michael Schmidt and Jonathan Taves, percussion ensemble; Lindsay DeLeeuw, oboe solo; Tracy Gustafson, Kevin Klawitter, Bridget Timm and Stephanie Wegscheid, saxophone quartet; Nathan Hercula, alto sax solo; Alissa Johnson, flute solo; Samantha McGrane, flute solo; Pat Mertens and Zach Stevens, brass duet; Rachel Papillon, French horn solo; Cassy Popp and Sara Wegscheid, woodwind duet; and Stacie Wolfenden, trombone solo.

The band students qualified for state after receiving superior ratings in the instrumental solo and ensemble contest April 4 in Verndale. Scores were based on elements such as intonation, technique, musical style, blend and overall performance.
