Speeders to get extra attention

Many drivers who pass through the 20 mile per hour zone near Verndale's baseball field are not following the posted limit, several residents reported Monday.

Many drivers who pass through the 20 mile per hour zone near Verndale's baseball field are not following the posted limit, several residents reported Monday.

"We've got to do something," remarked Leland Moyer, a city council member. "It's bad."

City maintenance supervisor Jim Bergquist suggested installing a speed bump at a cost of $1,100. But Mayor Wayne Stave asked for extra patrol in the area before spending that money.

Police Chief Bill Gilroy said the patrol would start right away.

"I went out and yelled at two, three of them myself," Moyer reported.

He said if the extra patrol didn't work, another solution was needed.

"The thing about patrolling is it's only effective when they're there," council member Bruce Koppenhaver added. "A speed bump is there all the time."
