A Maple Grove man was charged July 27 in Otter Tail County District Court with six counts of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon and one count of possession of a pistol after being convicted of a crime of violence after allegedly firing a pistol at a street dance in Deer Creek early Sunday morning.

Bail was set at $200,000 without court conditions or $100,000 bond with conditions for Anthony Edward Mitchell, who turned 33 the evening before the alleged early morning incident.

Around 1:48 a.m. on July 25, a New York Mills police officer and Otter Tail County sheriff's deputy responded to a report of a gun being fired at a street dance in Deer Creek as part of the town's festival, Deer Trail Days. A woman told police she had seen a man fire the gun into the air over the crowd, out of a white Chevy Blazer.

Three other witnesses fingered Mitchell, who they said had called some people at the street dance the n-word, then tried to fight with them. When Mitchell and his brothers got back into the vehicle, Mitchell got out, retrieved the gun from his trunk, got back into the Blazer and fired it, court documents said. No one was hit or hurt by the gunshot.

Mitchell's girlfriend had allegedly been driving him and his brothers around in a vehicle that was later learned to be stolen, an offense Mitchell's girlfriend was later arrested for.

Mitchell's next appearance in Otter Tail County District Court is set for Aug. 9. County prosecutors also told the judge they expect more charges to be filed against Mitchell in Todd or Wadena Counties.
