The much-needed rain put a damper on the Wadena-Deer Creek Area Shockers season opener Sunday against Perham.

That game will be made up in a date to be determined.

Instead, the Shockers hope to jolt the local fans with another exciting year of amateur baseball action on Sunday, when they battle rival Bluffton Braves at 1:30 p.m. in Bluffton.

In their second year of existence since combining the old Wadena Chiefs and Deer Creek Cardinal town teams, the Shockers have already made a name for themselves by winning the Hi-10 League title and making a state amateur baseball appearance by capturing runner-up honors in the Region 14C tournament.

The Shockers return all nine starters of their lineup from the 2005 team with a few additions as they prepare to be a team to be reckoned with in the Hi-10. Most players are 17-31 years old and graduates of the Wadena-Deer Creek School system. Improved play of the younger players and solid play from the veterans have the Shockers looking to the 2006 season with high expectations, including another shot at the state tournament.

The Shockers will play their home games at the Elmer Becker Field in Deer Creek. Area fans can be assured that the local and hometown boys will give them plenty to be excited about as they take the field for the 2006 season.
