Wadena-Deer Creek High School's Michael Schmidt and Courtny Warren were selected as this year's ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) Award nominees.
Each year, the program recognizes Minnesota high school juniors who are active in school activities, show leadership qualities, and volunteer in their communities. The nominees are eligible for a statewide award to be announced later in January by the Minnesota State High School League.
Schmidt participates in theater, band, choir, Knowledge Bowl, golf, baseball and clay target. He is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. Schmidt has volunteered at the Humane Society, Empty Stocking Fund, PTO fundraisers, Princess Warrior, WAVE Secret Santa, Leo Lions, Christmas Festival, book fairs, and his church. He is the son of Kent and Dr. Shaneen Schmidt of Wadena.
Warren is an honor student and member of the National Honor Society. She participates in choir, softball and serves as captain of the volleyball and dance teams. She's been active on the Homecoming Committee, Math League and has served as a Peer Mentor. Warren was also selected as a Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership participant. She volunteers with her church, as well as numerous NHS and volleyball activities. She is the daughter of Paul and Heather Warren of Wadena.
