Road reversion meeting set

The Shell River Township Board tentatively agreed to have 11 miles of county roads reverted to them pending public comment, said Wadena County Highway Engineer Joel Ulring.

The Shell River Township Board tentatively agreed to have 11 miles of county roads reverted to them pending public comment, said Wadena County Highway Engineer Joel Ulring.

Ulring met with the board Sept. 18.

"We had a good discussion," he said.

The board took the information under advisement and told the county the following Monday they would like to proceed, Ulring said.

The roads slated for reversion are County Roads 149, 150 and 152. They have an average daily traffic ranging from 15 to 45 vehicles.

Ulring cited benefits to tax payers when he first proposed the county revert 160 miles of county roads to townships last fall.

Townships have lower costs related to staff, benefits and building maintenance than the county, he said. Township roads receive state gas tax funding and Wadena County residents could realize additional gas tax revenue if the roads are reverted.

A public hearing to discuss the road reversion is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the Shell River Town Hall off County Road 150 in the southeast corner of section 20.
