Officer Naomi Plautz was approved to be promoted as the new Wadena police sergeant at the Tuesday Wadena City Council meeting.

The position was opened when the previous sergeant, Tom Crawford, retired.

There were 12 applicants, seven of which were interviewed.

"Naomi Plautz scored highest in oral interview and written. She's been an employee with us for 14 years," Police Chief Bruce Uselman said. "She's been involved in some pretty intensive investigations."

The council discussed whether to advertise for Plautz's previous officer position. Because of the economy and budget, the city has had to reduce municipal staff by not replacing workers who have left or retired.

The council decided to not advertise for the job yet, but instead meet to discuss and make a decision later as to whether to hire a new police officer.
