Occupational therapy, by definition, implements the therapeutic use of self-care, work and play activities to increase independent function, enhance development and prevent disability. A test is available at Lakewood Health System to determine the level of care an individual must need to remain as independent as possible. Janet Byland, the newest occupational therapist at Lakewood conducts this test, called Cognitive Performance Testing.
To further explain how this test can help caregivers decide "what's next" for a parent or other loved one, Lakewood Health System will host an event as part of the HealthBEAT 2009 speaking series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the Main Campus classrooms of Lakewood Health System. Presentations include:
- What Now? Evaluating Cognitive Performance by Janet Byland, OT
- Swallow Evaluation and Therapies by Andrea Rhuby, speech therapist
Rhuby, also new at Lakewood Health System, will focus on the importance of functional swallowing. For anyone who experiences difficulty when swallowing including: excessive coughing before or after drinking liquids or eating food, weight loss with no explanation, or a sensation of something in the throat after a swallow. A swallow evaluation by a speech language pathologist can help identify and consider compensatory strategies to help reduce or eliminate difficulty. Patients with disorders that may hinder swallowing performance, such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer's, traumatic brain injury, oral cancers of the face or neck and others can also benefit from a swallow evaluation.
