Carr announces scholarship program for 2015

Sheriff Michael D. Carr of Wadena County announced today the commencement of the Law Enforcement Scholarship Program for 2015. Sheriff Carr proudly announced that the MSA Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund for the awarding of up to 15 $600 scholarships for this year. These scholarships are due to the coordinated efforts of the 87 Sheriffs of the State of Minnesota.

The Members of MSA gives special recognition to the financial needs of students attending the peace officer skills course, or one of the two or four year law enforcement degree colleges.

"The Board of Directors feel peace officers in our democratic society have complex duties to perform" said Sheriff Carr.

MSA recognizes the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as their career choice. MSA recognizes some students need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically.

• In their second year of a two year law enforcement program.

• In their third or fourth year of a four year college criminal justice program.

In order to qualify, students must have completed at least one year of the two year program or two years of a four year program. Students meeting these criteria are invited to obtain a scholarship application form from their local sheriff's office or online at www.mnsheriffs.org .

Water testing on tap Aug. 21

The Wadena Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) and Central Lakes College Ag and Energy Center, will offer a free nitrate water-testing clinic at the Central Lakes College Farm on County Road 2 by Staples during their field day on Friday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Drop off your sample at the registration table for testing. To participate in the testing, homeowners are asked to bring at least one-half cup of water in preferably a clean plastic or clean glass container. To get a good sample, allow the tap to run five minutes before filling the container. Homeowners with distillation units, reverse osmosis or other nitrate removal systems should take two water samples - one before and one after the treatment process. This will determine if the system is working. Homeowners with just a water softener need to take one sample, either before or after the water passes through the water softener. Samples should be taken no more than 24 hours before the testing and must be kept refrigerated prior to testing. To ensure accurate results, homeowners should mark the container with their name, phone number and a well identification number if more than one well is sampled. Homeowners who wish to remain anonymous should choose an easily recognized "code number" to identify their sample. It is not necessary to provide information about the well or well location.

Samples will be analyzed on the spot - the process usually takes less than five minutes - and results will be given directly to the homeowner. If the nitrate level in a sample is elevated, clinic staff can refer the homeowner to certified labs that will retest the water.

For questions about the clinic or how to take a water sample contact the Wadena SWCD at (218) 631-3195.
