Minnie Whiting, 96, of Henning, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home in Alexandria.
She was born in Hewitt on Feb. 25, 1913, the daughter of Herman and Emma (Volgman) Wendorf. She grew up in the Hewitt and Deer Creek areas. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Her confirmation at Oak Valley Lutheran Church was in German. After finishing the eighth grade, she began working. She candled eggs for Al Torgerson produce, worked as a cook for Gib and Aggie Trana's restaurant, baked pies for Loren Thalmann's Rec Cafe and later worked in the Homecrest Furniture plant in Wadena. She was a homemaker who loved cooking, baking and canning. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting, making mittens, scarves and stocking caps for her family. She was an avid card player and Bingo player, and loved to watch the Minnesota Twins. She married Melvin Nyberg in June 1933 in Deer Creek. Melvin died in April 1961. In November 1965, she married Archie Whiting, who died in March 1994.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 7, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Henning with the Rev. Randy Maland officiating. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters, Jackie Gallagher, Lisa Gallagher, Laura Freeman, Holly Sorum, Susan Christoffer, Linda Nyberg and Sharon Nyberg. Active pallbearers are her grandsons: Lee Post, Alan Post, Randy Moeser, Rick Moeser, David Lange, Michael Nyberg, Steven Nyberg and Gary Nyberg. Interment is in the Good Shepherd Lutheran cemetery at Henning. Visitation is for an hour prior to services at then church. Survivors include her daughters, JoAnn (Loren) Post, Brooklyn Park, Minn., Pauline (Russ) Moesser, Alexandria, and Mary Lou (Merle) Lange, of Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter-in-law, Lu; a sister, Stella Helmrich, Deer, Creek; brothers, Irv Wendorf, Sauk Rapids, Minn., and Roy (Marlys) Wendorf, Deer Creek; 15 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; sons, Roger and Lyle; daughter-in-law, Darleen; three infant grandchildren; sisters, May, Mart, Ruth, Alvina and Alma; and brothers, Ed, Alf and Marv.
