Menahga woman charged with financial exploitation

After allegedly spending Social Security checks meant to pay for her mother's nursing home care, a Menahga woman was charged in Wadena County District Court with financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult -- failure to provide care.

After allegedly spending Social Security checks meant to pay for her mother's nursing home care, a Menahga woman was charged in Wadena County District Court with financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult -- failure to provide care.

Shelley Burtt, 46, was investigated by Wadena County sheriff's deputies after her mother's nursing home reported an outstanding debt of $29,000 from 2007, and nonpayment for three months in 2008, totaling $1,752.

Burtt allegedly used her mother's monthly check of $637 for her own needs. Burtt had power of attorney for her mother.

She was charged Dec. 12 in Wadena County District Court, and was scheduled for an appearance on Jan. 12.
