Tyler Foss of Grygla, a student in the telecommunications program at M State - Wadena, won a bronze medal at the National SkillsUSA Championships in Kansas City, Mo., in June.
Foss competed in the category of Telecommunications Cabling, advancing to the national competition after winning first place in the Minnesota SkillsUSA contest in April. In the category, students are judged on the basis of a written test and by demonstrating their expertise in a number of areas including cable pulling, copper media, standards and codes, telecommunications cabling systems, transmission theory and troubleshooting.
Foss was one of five M State - Wadena students who competed in Kansas City after winning first place in their state competitions. The others were Kayla Winn in Cosmetology, Skylar Kuglar in Esthetics, Cheyenne Pickar as a model in Esthetics and John Weeding in Computer and Networking Technology.
Both the state and national competitions are based on industry-driven occupational skills standards.
"Telecommunications instructor Les Schwartz did a fantastic job training Tyler," said Rory Wgeishofski, the M State - Wadena campus SkillsUSA advisor and a cosmetology advisor. "I'm very proud of Tyler's award and the accomplishments of all our students who qualified for the national competition."

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization that serves teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations. More than 5,600 students from all 50 states competed in 96 different fields during the Kansas City event, which was held in conjunction with the National Leadership and Skills Conference.
