WADENA — Ron Noon is a former Wadena County Commissioner and said he’s open to listening to the county residents as the next Dist. 1 Wadena County Commissioner.
The Pioneer Journal asked the three Dist. 1 candidates questions prior to the primary election where two candidates will be selected to move on to the general election.
Read on to find out more about Mr. Noon.
Why are you running for office and what are your goals?
I’ve been in public service for about 35 years. I was a prior county commissioner. I enjoyed working with board members and the public addressing concerns in the county. I think as a whole the county is running well. I would like to see the county address things with state representatives when it comes to where the county is, property tax wise, for the citizens and residents, so we have more parity throughout the state. That’s probably the biggest thing that’s affecting our county right now.
Our department heads streamline the budgets so expenses are being held down. I know they do a great job, but these times we’re in now, desperate times deserve desperate measures, even if it’s on a temporary basis. I think we need to tighten our belts and be very aware that it’s the taxpayer’s money that we are being good stewards of.
What makes you the best candidate?
First and foremost, my experience. Being within the community for 35 plus years. Retired from Wadena Police Department after 25 years of service. I know the area. I know the people.
I listen to people. I don’t have an agenda at all. I am pretty open and responsive to suggestions from everyone. I think it’s good to be open minded, but forward thinking.
One of the things I think is really important is that the citizens need to get more involved. I would like to see town hall meetings with citizens coming and sharing ideas and options on moving forward. Something has to give, either staffing or services. That’s what drives expenses. Citizens have to be aware that I’m willing to do whatever – but give us some ideas.
I talked to a few elected officials who encouraged me to run. I have a can-do attitude.
Just because we haven’t done it doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
Can you please tell us more about yourself?
Noon serves on the Wadena Lions Club. He’s a former Wadena Township board member. He’s a past president of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wadena and former Wadena Police Officer of 25 years.
I’m a fiscal conservative but I believe in responsible government and being accountable to the citizens, but I’d love to see the community grow.
Is there an issue that you feel needs to be addressed immediately in the county?
It's the property tax parity, with the state representatives and having something addressed at the state Legislature.
There needs to be more public involvement with the citizens reaching out and being proactive coming up with solutions and ideas. We’re just the representatives and I’ll be the first to admit I don’t have all the answers. I don’t care which side of the aisle you are on, there are good ideas out there, let’s explore those.
