• Auditor/treasurer job to be discussed today at public hearing
Wadena County residents will have a chance to voice their opinions about whether the county auditor/treasurer position should be appointed instead of elected.
County Auditor/Treasurer L.L. Wegscheid said she doesn't know if the commissioners will vote on the matter or if the hearing will be continued to the next meeting. The hearing is open to the public.

The Wadena County Board of Commissioners petitioned state representatives after its Jan. 8 meeting to acquire information to make the auditor/treasurer's office appointed. At the Feb. 5 county board meeting, the commissioners approved a resolution to make the position appointed.
According to the resolution, the office would become appointed at the end of the elected term of office of the incumbent or earlier if the office becomes vacant. Wegscheid's term is up at the end of the year, so the office could be appointed as soon as her term is over.
The resolution also includes a provision for a reverse referendum if a petition is signed by 10 percent of the registered voters in Wadena County. In other words, a petition signed by 10 percent of registered voters could overturn a decision by the commissioners.
Wegscheid said she spoke with Rep. Roxann Daggett, who has agreed to carry the resolution through the legislature.
