Letter to the Editor: Proper flag etiquette a small step of respect

Loving this land and our freedoms are values that bring Minnesotans together. During each summer we have community events and national holidays, including Flag Day and Independence Day, that allow us to celebrate these values and our democracy.

Loving this land and our freedoms are values that bring Minnesotans together. During each summer we have community events and national holidays, including Flag Day and Independence Day, that allow us to celebrate these values and our democracy.

It is especially inspiring to see the younger generations and older generations joining together across our state to embrace good citizenship. Practicing proper flag etiquette is a small thing we all can do to demonstrate our respect for one of the most important symbols of our democracy. For example, this summer, when flags come by as part of a parade, you can show respect by facing the flag, removing your cap, and standing with your right hand over your heart. For some great information on the topic of flag etiquette, my office offers an instructional brochure, which you can get by calling (651) 201-1332. Quantities are available for distribution to groups.

Over the next year, as Minnesota commemorates our 150th anniversary of statehood, we will have many opportunities to reflect on the timeless values embodied in our democracy by showing proper respect for the symbols of our democracy, like the flag. I am planning on bringing to Minnesota for public display one of the original copies of our Declaration of Independence, another important symbol that shaped our democracy.

We are fortunate to have inherited a system of government that has at its center individual liberties, freedoms, and rights. Respect for the symbols of that democratic inheritance should be fostered in every generation.
