Leslie Lawrence Schwantz, 82, passed away on June 15, 2007. After battling leukemia, he died peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Jan. 16, 1925, at the home of his parents, William and Annie Schwantz, in Woodside township. After graduating from Bertha High School, he honorably served his country in World War II and upon his return, farmed west of Bertha with his parents. He married Betty Marie Boehland on Sept. 23, 1950, in Bertha and together they farmed six miles west of Bertha until the time of his death.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren, playing cards, and was a devoted spectator at all his children's events.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, June 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bertha with the Rev. Peter Kirchner as celebrant. Active pallbearers were Craig Schwantz, Chris Schwantz, Nicholas Schwantz, Brent Gundberg, Doug Heinen, John Schwantz and Joel Peterson. The honorary pallbearers were all of the remaining grandchildren. Burial is in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in rural Bertha. The Domian-Anderson Funeral Home of Bertha is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Betty; children, Jerry (Rose) of Clear Lake, Minn., Steve (Connie) of Fergus Falls, Connie (Bob) Wenker of Hewitt, Mark (Carla) of Bertha, Kevin (Laura) of Holdingford, Minn., Brian (Cami) of Ottertail; 18 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Theresa Weber (William) of Wadena, Virgie Walker of Alexandria; brothers Elvin of Hewitt, and Bill of Harris, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie; brother, Floyd; and infant grandson, Douglas.
