The Wadena-Deer Creek girls basketball team is stuck in the middle of the alphabet. By the time this week is out, the Wolverines will be a bit sick of the letter "P."

First they lost to Pequot Lakes 64-55 on Dec. 11, and then they lost to Pierz 55-50 on Dec. 13 before picking up a 52-43 victory over Pelican Rapids on Friday.

On Monday, they lost a thrilling double-overtime game to Perham 69-66.

Mindy Howard poured in 26 points for the Pequot Lakes Patriots in the Mid-State Conference victory. Brigetta Berg scored 20 points and Courtney Volkmann chipped in with 15 for the Wolverines. Jordan Moenkedick added nine points and 12 rebounds in the loss. The Wolverines shot 19-of-51 (37 percent) from the field and had 12 turnovers.

Robin Soukup added 15 points for the Patriots.

Pierz senior Katie Kimman had 23 points to help the Pioneers squeeze past the Wolverines. WDC had a three point lead with eight minutes to play but couldn't put the Pioneers away.

Wolverine Coach Darin Carstens noted that the team needs to work on winning close games.

"We don't know how to put teams away once we get a lead," he said. "We need to minimize the costly mistakes so we can start winning those close games."

WDC shot 22-of-60 (36 percent) from the field and were led by Berg's 20 points. Moenkedick pitched in 10 points and seven rebounds for the Wolverines.

Berg netted 21 points, Moenkedick 13 and Courtney Volkmann 11 as the Wolverines defeated the Pelican Rapids 52-43 Friday.

WDC had a slim 21-20 lead at the break but came out aggressive in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Stephanie Torkildson had 18 points and Haley Hoyer 14 for the Vikings in the loss.

On Monday, WDC lost a thriller to Perham in Wadena. The complete story and results will be in next week's PJ.
