As Wadena-Deer Creek high school wraps up the school year, it calls its new incentive program and after-school boosters program successes.
Teachers said both programs made a difference, said Tim Bjorge, WDC high school principal.
The programs began second semester and help junior high students complete and understand their homework. The incentive program offers a school-arranged activity for kids who complete their homework on time. The after-school boosters program provides additional homework help and enrichment activities.
Stephanie Drange, a teacher who helps with the booster program, sees the program helping kids with homework completion.
Kids get their homework done on time, and its just a fun place for kids to be after school, she said.

After-school boosters program is available for seventh- and eighth-graders on Tuesdays and Thursdays. A handful of teachers and a high school volunteer help with the program.
For the incentives program, middle school teachers check to see if their students assignments are complete. Every week, students must have all of their assignments completed by Friday to remain on the list. After third quarter, 123 of 189 kids were eligible for the incentives trip. Ninety-five of those kids, the ones who chose to go and didnt have conflicts, attended a trip to the Perham Community Center and swam, played basketball and racquet ball and participated in activities in the gym.
Another activity is being planned for kids who are eligible based on fourth-quarter homework completion.
The high school decided to offer the incentives and boosters programs after middle school teachers and Bjorge discussed ways they could help seventh and eighth grade students make the transition to high school and help struggling kids.
