Hedwig "Hedy" Newman, 79, formerly of Wadena, passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at the Elders Home in New York Mills.
She was born to Anton and Anna (Stang) Schmitz on July 26, 1927, at St. Martin, Minn. On June 25, 1951, she married Leon Manford Newman at Regal, Minn. Leon passed away on Oct. 7, 2002. They made the Wadena area their home for the past 56 years. She was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary and St. Ann's Catholic Church. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards, reading and visiting with family and friends.
The Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wadena with the Rev. Donald Wagner as celebrant. Pallbearers were Krista Johnson-Langehaug, Jeremy Johnson, Kelly Johnson, John Doolittle, Graham Newman, Carly Doolittle, Melissa Jean and Sara Jean. Burial is in the Calvary Cemetery of Wadena. The Johnson Memorial Home of Wadena was in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her son, Richard, of Deer Creek; daughters, Liz (Randy) Johnson of Nisswa, Margie Newman of Brooklyn Park, Judy (Brent) Doolittle of Henning, and Jan (Phil) Jean of St. Michael; eight grandchildren; brothers, Clem (Rosie) Schmitz of Lexington, Zeno (Joan) Schmitz of Buffalo, Linus (Margie) Schmitz of St. Louis Park; sisters, Melania (Donald) Bragelman of Richmond and Sylvia Schmitz of St. Anthony. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; son, Robert; brothers, Norbert, Isidore and Cyril Schmitz; sister, Teckla Grundtner.
