Wadena City Council: Used truck, new employee and garbage contract topics of special meeting

Wadena City Council members approved the purchase of 2007 Freightliner water pump truck to be used by the city in various water needs including dust-control or filling ice rinks and swimming pools.

Dan Kovar presented on how he would like to sell the city's current truck, an old milk truck and replace it with the newer truck. In looking over the new truck's history, he found it needs a new pump. He used that fact to help lower the price of the truck to $43,900.This truck has a 2,000 gallon tank.

The city budgeted $50,000 for this purchase. The old truck will be sold on GovDeals.com.

In other board action:

• Phillip Hastings was hired as the Wadena Municipal Liquor Store's full-time sales associate/retail clerk with all council members in favor. Five were interviewed for the position. Hastings comes from the Perham Liquor Store.

• The city of Wadena is entering into a new contract with Long Prairie Sanitation to continue garbage service for the city at a rate of $1,480.66 per month. LPS's new bid came in lower than what they are currently charging the city. Their bid came in lower than two other bidders, Waste Management and G&T Sanitation.

The city has 10 garbage stop locations, four are regular pickup locations and others are seasonal.
