Girls' cross country 15th at Mega meet

On Saturday, Wadena-Deer Creek's cross country teams competed at the largest high school cross country meet, the Milaca Mega Meet. One hundred nine teams and almost 4,000 runners competed in 17 races.

On Saturday, Wadena-Deer Creek's cross country teams competed at the largest high school cross country meet, the Milaca Mega Meet. One hundred nine teams and almost 4,000 runners competed in 17 races.

The Wolverines ran only one complete team, the girls varsity, which placed 15th out of 37 teams in their division. Hannah Toedter was the highest Wolverine placer with 47th with a time of 16:46. Finishing in the top 100 were Kelsey Browne in 80th at 17:28, Emily Wood in 96th at 17:46 and Bethany Papillon in 99th at 17:47. Bailee Schissel was Wadena-Deer Creek's fifth runner in 118th at 18:04 and Lauren Girard rounded out the team with a 18:46 in 155th place.

Cory Asfeld ran a great race, finishing 32nd with a 17:25, just five seconds of his career best. Other best Wolverine finishes in each race included Neil Janson 23rd at 12:10 in the eighth-grade race. Tim Papillon was 50th at 19:10 for the 10th-grade race, just seven seconds of his best time. Chris Papillon was 55th in the seventh-grade race with a time of 13:29; Zach Bernu earned a 75th in 19:53 in the ninth-grade race and Heather Birch was 258th in 21:09 of 371 runners.

Next up for the Wolverines is the Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota on Saturday. On Oct. 2, they travel to Perham.
