Four Wolverines place in top 25

Hannah Toedter's eighth place time of 16:58.64 paced four top 25 times by the Wolverines Tuesday in the annual Wolverine Invitational.

Sultry weather conditions dominated the afternoon meet at Whitetail Run Golf Course. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle posted the winning boys' score of 37 and Park Rapids claimed the girls' title with 49 points. The WDC girls placed fourth in a field of seven teams with 104 points while the boys took sixth with 145 points. A total of 12 teams competed in the meet.

Toedter, who represented WDC in the Class A state cross country meet last fall, ran the entire course with a Top 8 group that was led at the end by Little Falls' Manon Gammon-Dooring with a time of 15:49.14. Runner-up honors went to Park Rapids' Lydia Lutz with a time of 15:59.22. Staples-Motley's Emma Pogreba and Kaytlin Roth finished third and fourth with times of 16:04.43 and 16:16.80. Victoria Lutz of Park Rapids rounded out the top five with a time of 16:17.19.

Mary McGrane and Lauren Girard broke the Top 25 for the WDC girls with times of 18:03.79 and 18:27.06. WDC's Kelsey Browne came in 34th with a time of 20:08.25 and Bailee Schissel was 38th with a 21:02.33.

Neil Janson ran the best time for the WDC boys with a 19:08.82 that earned the sophomore 18th place in a field of 55 runners. Tony Ross finished 30th for the Wolverines with a 20:13.12 time while Zach Bernu ran a 36th place time of 20:51.18, Jacob Snyder ran a 43rd place time of 21:19.55 and Forrest McQuiston turned in a 50th place time of 2:08.08.

Nevis sophomore Byron Schuidt broke the 17-minute barrier on the course with a first-place time of 16:57.30. The winning Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder had six finishers in the Top 15 led by Alex Liebsch who claimed fifth place with a 17:48.06. Challenging Schuidt for top honors was fellow sophomore Preston Zimny of Little Falls who ran a 17:24.13. Staples-Motley standout Gunner Johnson finished third with a 17:26.16 and Little Falls' Ricky Devine was fourth with a 17:36.46.

United North Central's Jonathan Miller cracked the top 25 with a 24th place time of 19:54.91.

WDC's Shane Motschenbacher was just eight seconds off the winning pace in the boys' junior high race with a time of 12:14.15. Little Falls' Mathew Mussmann won the 35-runner event with a 12:05.27. WDC's Brody Wangsness was 25th with a 14:33.59.

WDC's Emma Schmitz ran solo in the girls' junior high meet and placed seventh in a field of 37 with a time of 14:38.00. Pelican Rapids' Emily Bakken won the race with a 13:35.66.
