The third-annual Whiskey Creek Film Festival starts Friday and features six films that might not typically be seen in greater Minnesota.

A committee selects the films based on simple rules that the films be good film art, movies in current theatrical release and be films that wouldn't otherwise be seen in greater Minnesota.

"Almost all were featured at the Sundance Film Festival," said Jamie Robertson, a film festival board member.

The films are shown at the Cozy Theatre in Wadena from Sept. 14-20, over the span of a week. In previous years, the film festival was only on the weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Movie-goers doubled from the first to second year of the film festival, Robertson said, and he hopes this year is even better.

The movies featured in this year's Whiskey Creek Film Festival include:

  • "Waitress" -- a fun comedy about a "pie genius"
  • "Arctic Tale" -- beautiful cinematography in the home of the walrus and polar bear
  • "Sicko" -- documentary of the American health-care system
  • "Rescue Dawn" -- dramatic retelling of a Vietnam-war-era escape
  • "Once" -- two musicians fall in love in Ireland
  • "Away from Her" -- a beautiful performance by Julie Christie

The film festival is made possible through support from the Five Wings Arts Council, funding from the Minnesota State Legislature and funding from the Wadena Convention and Visitors Bureau. The National Joint Powers Alliance in Staples was a fiscal agent for the project.
