Extra outs cost WDC against Perham

Defensive woes hurt Kyle Dykhoff and his Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines Friday as they dropped both ends of a doubleheader with a veteran Perham squad.

The Yellowjackets broke open a 2-2 game with a four-run fourth and went on to win 9-7. A four-run rally by WDC in the bottom of the sixth threw a scare into the Perham club but Shawn Stafki nailed down the win with a scoreless seventh.

The Wolverines were guilty of seven errors in the loss.

"We battled back yet again but giving them too many extra outs hurt us," Dykhoff said. "This team proved that they can play with anyone. With some consistent defense the close games will start to go our way."

Josh Sweere swung a big bat for WDC with three hits and two runs. Tyler Wohlwend launched a three-run shot in the sixth. Shane Miller scored three times and drove in a pair of runs for Perham. Gavin Biegler an Andrew Muer both collected two hits.

Ben Omberg out-dueled Kevin Tumberg for the mound win.

A flat WDC team came up with just two hits in the nightcap and suffered a 19-1 loss in five innings.

Gannon George suffered the loss while Miller gained the pitching win.

Tumberg and Sweere had hits for WDC while Omberg and Tyler Lynne cranked out three-run homer for Perham. Anthony Ruther drive, scored three times and drove in two runs.

Ryan and Cody Redfield gained mound victories Tuesday as the Wolverines swept their first doubleheader of the year.

Ryan was backed up by good hitting in his outing. The freshman hurler, who fanned five and gave up only one earned run in five innings, was supported by an 11-hit attack.

Gannon George was 3-for-5 while Matt Hagen and Josh Sweere collected two hits each. Sweere drove in a pair of runs. George and Hagen both scored twice. Tyler Wohlwend reached three times with a double and two walks.

"We did a good job of putting the ball in play," WDC head coach Kyle Dykhoff said. "We played very well offensively but we still have things to sharpen up on defensively."

The Wolverines committed five errors.

Cody Redfield gave the Wolverines a complete game performance on the hill in Game 2. The game was called after six due to darkness.

Redfield struck out eight and gave up only one earned run.

"Cody came back strong after a tough outing in Bertha," Dykhoff said. "In both games we had contributions from everyone. I think we are starting to gel as a team."

Joey Peters led the Wolverines at the plate with three hits and two runs. Hagen came up with two safeties and two RBIs. Sweere doubled and drove in two runs. All three hitters collected doubles. Cody Redfield and Ryan Nelson combined for two hits, two runs and one RBI.

Kyle Pribyl led the Rangers with two hits.

The Pirates shook off a tough week by rallying from a 5-1 deficit to edge the Chargers.

Clay Cottrell was charged with five walks, six hits and six earned runs in the victory. Cottrell was touched for four runs in the opening frame as he issued four free passes.

Runyan, Moenkedick and Siedschlaw all came up with two safeties in the comeback. Runyan drove in a pair of runs and Siedschlaw stole four bases.

The Pirates improved to 2-7 with the win.

Alex Brockphaler fired a one-hit gem as the Trojans blitzed the Pirates Thursday.

Brady Siedschlaw was hung with the mound loss in the Park Region Conference game.

Cody Yungbauer accounted for Verndale's only hit off Brockpahler.

"Brockpahler was really tough," Sperling said. "He was able to hit his spots with all of his pitches."

The Huskies roughed up the Pirates Tuesday for a pair of Park Region Conference wins.

Verndale's Matt Moenkedick and Brady Siedschlaw both went 3-for-4 in the opener. Sebastian Stelck went 3-for-4 in Game 1 for Pillager.

Tyson Bell went 3-for-4 in Game 1 for Pillager and hit a three-run shot in Game 2. Stelck also homered. Jay Runyan went 2-for-4.

"Pillager made the plays when they needed and we didn't," Verndale head coach Justin Sperling said.

Jordan Hunstad held Verndale to four hits in the nightcap. Dustin Motschenbacher was hung with the loss.

"Dustin threw strikes vbut had no help defensively," Sperling said. "It's hard to win at any level with nine errors."
