Wadena-Deer Creek FCCLAers were inspired by the Land of 10,000 Dreams themed MN FCCLA State Conference in Bloomington.
One local student in particular made waves at the annual conference. Elliot Doyle was elected as the MN FCCLA State President Elect. In her 39 years of advising, no FCCLA chapter in Wadena County has had a state president, according to advisor Cindi Koll.
Elliot will serve as the MN FCCLA State President-Elect during the 2019-20 school year. He will serve as the State President during the 2020-21 school year.
The state conference featured motivational speaker, Morris Morrison who reminded delegates that the world needs their talents. Minnesota First Lady, Gwen Walz also addressed the students and shared with them how her FHA (previous name of FCCLA) experiences have impacted her adult life. Other speakers included Craig Scott from Rachel's Challenge, Jerrid Sebesta, who spoke on finding your purpose, and retired Navy Commander Master Chief Vonn Banks who asks, "How may I serve you?" and encourages students to do the same.
WDC FCCLAers found success in their STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Event competitions.
First time state FCCLA participants, Gracie Arm and Jenny Varela earned a silver medal, Danielle Dickey, earned a gold medal as did Madyson Beversluis.
Mikayla Varela and Caleb Cully participated in Everyday Equations where Caleb earned a silver and Mikayla earned a gold medal.
Members who advanced to competition at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, Calif., are Casey Bounds and Morgan Grangruth in Chapter in Review.
Angela LeComte in Nutrition and Wellness, Emma Mehl in Fashion Construction and Elliot Doyle in Life Event Planning.
The Sr. Buzz Team of Frannie Bakken, Morgan Grangruth, Emma Mehl and Angela LeComte came in third place in that competition.
Mikayla Varela was one of nine FCCLA members in the state to win the Ultimate Leader Award.
Morgan Grangruth was elected as the MN Central West Area Peer Educator and Emma Mehl was elected as the Central West Area President.
WDC FCCLA alums Caitlin Savage and Hope Norenberg attended as chaperones and STAR Event judges. The WDC Chapter is advised by Cindi Koll and LaDonna Norenberg.
