Kyle Moench has learned that an Eagle Scout project is a lot of work.

"It's not as easy as it looks," he said.

The 15-year-old Wadena high-schooler is nearing the completion of his Eagle Scout project, which is the construction of a shelter at Sunnybrook Park. He is the son of Roman and Barb Moench.

The requirements to become an Eagle Scout include earning merit badges, holding a leadership position in the troop and conducting a service project.

The shelter Moench is constructing will replace a previous structure that came down in a storm. He has worked closely with Wadena Public Works Director Ron Bucholz on the project.

The shelter is located in south Sunnybrook Park. The previous shelter was made of wood and had a shingled roof. The new shelter includes improvements such as tongue-and-groove boards on the underside to prevent birds from roosting under the shelter. Also, the roof is made from steel instead of shingles.

The city parks committee approved the plan, followed by the Wadena City Council and Eagle board. Moench began work on the project in August. The Wadena City Council approved a bid for the plan at its August meeting.

Moench was responsible for lining up all the workers and finding friends, family and other scouts to help. He is required to put in 100 hours of work on the project but said he has already worked more than 200 hours on the shelter. His older brother, Todd, is an Eagle Scout as well.

Now that school has started and it is getting dark earlier, it has been difficult for Moench to find time to work on the project. But he hopes to have the shelter completed by the time it snows.

Moench is the senior patrol leader for his troop, which has 16 people in it, he said. He has been involved in scouts since he was a Cub Scout in first grade. He attends summer camp each year at Camp Wilderness in Park Rapids.

Moench is a baseball player and plays drums in the band. He likes to hunt and fish as well.
