The opening match of the season for the Wadena-Deer Creek boys tennis team didnt go the Wolverines way as the Lakers slipped past them with a 4-3 victory on April 13.
Both teams split singles matches, while the Lakers got the match winner in the number three doubles to escape the feisty Wolverines.
Derek Blazek swept his two set match at number three singles over Laker Eric Roethel by scores of 6-4, 6-3, and Jeff Brown did likewise for the Wolverines in the fourth singles. Brown defeated Laker Matt Branstad 6-1, 7-5 to preserve the split.
Wolverine Aaron Nelson lost a two-set match in the first singles by scores 1-6 and 3-6 to Detroit Lakes Shawn Gone. Wolverines number two singles player Jacob Hillesland lost his first set 3-6 but fought back to make the match a bit of a contest in the second set. Unfortunately, his Laker opponent Ryan Borgeson had enough to outlast him by winning a close set by a score of 7-5 to win the match in two sets.
The doubles portion provided some excitement for the Wolverine fans as the doubles tandem of Aaron Taggart/Chad Peterson opened with a 6-1 first set victory over Detroit Lakes Ben VanOffelen/Alex Nustad in the first doubles. The Lakers duo fought back to tie it at one set each with the 6-3 second set victory.

The score swung both ways in the decisive third set and the Lakers duo ended up winning the tiebreaker to defeat Taggart/Peterson by a score of 7-6 (4-0).
It was another three-set battle in the second doubles. After losing the first set 2-6 to Lakers Jerry Walden/Jake Hartman, the Wolverines tandem of Jason Hall/Tom Leyh went on to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-5 for the lone WDC victory in doubles.
At number three doubles, Wolverines Lukas Schmitz/Jeff Foster were swept in two sets by scores 3-6, 4-6.
